Chapter 4 — — FALL away

"Huh?"

You were loosing your balance, your head was dizzy as it falls towards the ground. Your hand desperately shoved in the air in hope to find something to grab on.

Although you were too shocked to think, all sort of thought flashes through your head:

"What if I fall like this!?" "My gear!! Why did I forget them?!" "What should I do?" "Will I die from this?!? Not even aten by a titan!?"

"WHY DID HE DO THIS?!"

As fear and confusion fulfilled your brain, a hand caught yours.

"What?" You thought.

Your feet were barely on the edge of the wall, your whole body hanged in the air, and your hand, strongly grabbed by his.

He looked at you with a pathetic and creepy smile. After having a great view of your shocked and confused face, he pulled you up and fall towards the opposite direction. You fall in his embrace, him half-seated on the ground and you, on his chest meekly.

Quickly, you lift your head and look upon him with a confused, afraid and questioning look. Words were on the edge of your lips but your voice won't come out. He, on the other hand, only looked at you with the same smile. He chuckled and said:

"It would be a pity if you fell, that's why, I'm the one who caught you. You see?" He helped you to get up and put his hands on your shoulders.

"Come, we're leaving." He said and left you there.

Stunned, you simply stood there. What is it? He brought you here just to show you this? What is it that he's trying to say? That you can be alive thanks to him? That he doesn't need much effort to have you in his embrace? That your fate depends on him? That you're his belongings? That your life itself is in the palm of his hand?!

The wind blew, you put your hands over your arms, rubbing the side gently to heat slightly your shivering form. You still remember how cold was that time. However, the one that is cold, was it simply the spring's wind, or was it his threatening words?

~Time Skip~

"What's wrong with you?" Hanji asked worriedly, "This isn't like you, normally you would swing left and right in the air, and just ditch us behind!"

You were on your knees.

"What the hell is this?" You thought, "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!?"

Kneeling on the ground, you were dumbfounded, not knowing what to do, you just sat there.

"Maybe you should take a--"

"No! I-I'll give it another try.. I don't know, there must be something not right, if I try again, I might figure out what it is?"

"... Well, if that's what you say... I'll carry you on a tree."

"Hmm.. Thank you..."

You stand carefully on the branch, the view of nothing but trees lays in front of your eyes. You were uncertain, but you had to do this for your own sake. You shaky hands griped on the gears, pulling the trigger twice to check if you had enough gaz. It was the first time you become anxious using your 3DMG since the days you left the training camp as a cadet.

"I can do this..." You thought to yourself, "It's just the usual thing as always, nothing has changed, nothing..."

With a dubious heart, you set off. At the beginning, it was okay. You were able to swing around a few tree. However your vision started to blur, you felt dizzy. That's when you start to loose control and balance. You couldn't change the gears in time correctly, you almost tangled your foot in the wires, and you didn't have the time to think. When you were able to lift your head, a tree was right in front of you. You had the time to avoid it but your left shoulder bumped into another one right behind. While trying desperately to keep your balance, you were falling gradually. You could hear them yell your name from behind. A few small branches scratched you. You were able to get back the wires and amortize the fall with the gaz. You tried to protect your head with your arms as you shrank your form. It was brutal when you hit the ground, you rolled a long way further. Although it wasn't fatal, the fall hurt you badly.

When you finally stopped rolling, you weren't capable to get up. Your limbs were shaking, your eyes could barely open. You turned as you tried to get up, groaned as your arms failed to support you. Then you felt a hot liquid flowing down your head. You wiped it with your hand and saw the color of blood.

Near you, you heard someone landed, you could tell it was Hanji.

"[Name]! Don't try to force yourself! As I thought, you should go and rest..." She tried to help you to get up, but you shoved her hand away.

"Leave it! I have to try again!! Otherwise-"

"Idiot! What are you saying so recklessly in this state? Can't you see how badly injured you are?! I'm worried, okay? I'm trying to help--!"

"I don't need your help!" You cried, "What do you know? Just right there, I didn't fall because I was careless or bad or because of the gear!! I fell because I was afraid!! Do you understand?! If I don't overcome this fear, I will never... I'll never be able to use this again!!"

That's right, if you don't do anything, you'll never be able to fight the Titans, to see the outer world. You'll never be able to fly again.

On that day, even under the warm sun, the trees that hid it's light made it feel more cold than usual. On that day, you come to realize that, you might have lost your wings.
